Experience: In the Classroom
In my three years at Western, I have had the opportunity to learn various useful skills through taking classes involving different disciplines. Here are some of them!
Research
I have taken the research methods series of classes at Western and have extensive experience with psychology research. This experience involves forming a question or identifying an area of interest, finding similar articles about this topic in psychology literature, collecting data, and writing results to report findings. I have also become familiar with SPSS which has helped me when compiling and analyzing data. In addition to this, I have had some experience with usability testing of digital interfaces.
Website Development
In completing the two web devolopment courses at Western, I learned how to create HTML webpages styles with CSS. Additionally, I learned skills where I was able to utilize JavaScript, JQuery, and CSS Grid among other skills. I used many of these skills when creating this website.
Human Development
In the Psychology major, a portion of the requirements involve learning about human development. In addition to the required class for all psychology majors, lifespan development, I have also taken socio-emotional development and social psychology. In these courses, I learned a lot about stages of human development and typical/atypical behaviors of children (and sometimes adults) throughout the course of their development.
Cognition
Cognition is a big area of interest for me as it encompases how poeple percieve and interact with their enviroment. I have taken courses that relate to cognition, social cognition, and applied cognition with user experience design. This fueled my interest for user experience and I have learned valuable skills relating to identifying behaviors as well as designing digital interfaces with cognition in mind in order to enhance interactions with the interface, and in turn improve overall satisfaction with the product.
Science
Before I knew I wanted to major in Psychology, I was looking into working toward a degree in behavioral neuroscience. Because of this, I took the General Chemistry and Biology series at Western, each consisting of 3 classes. In these courses, I learned a lot about plants, animals, and cells, and the various functions within them as well as various chemistry principles and equations.
