How to Read Tabs

Tabs are a different way of writing down music to be played on the guitar. Rather than using chords, tabs instead specify individual pitches on individual strings. In a tab, the strings are laid out as rows, with the high E string at the top and the low E string on the bottom. Each note is written as a number, which represents the fret you have to press -- the vertical location of that number corresponds to the string it should be played on. Tabs are read from left to right, top to bottom.
