About Me Marketing? DECA

About Me

My name is Wyatt Burley and I am a junior at Western Washington University. I am 20 years old and currently a Ski Instructor at Mt. Baker. I am from Spokane, WA and currently reside in Bellingham. In my free time I love to ski, mountain bike, and hike. I have been skiing for six years and love backcountry skiing when I do not have class. I mountain bike weekly at Galbraith or out on Chuckanut Drive. I have led many hikes around the northwest including a week long trip in the Mt. Baker National Wilderness and a 5 day hike in the Pasayten Wilderness. I also enjoy playing sports and hanging out with friends.

Why Marketing?

From a young age my parents always reminded me two things. I was great at arguing and great at negotaiting. It was alot of fun for me at a young age but my parents were not having as much fun. I was always trying to figure out a better way to put the dishes away or a smarter way to steal a base. I loved thinking outside the box and trying things that other people would normally be afraid of. Growing up math always came easy to me so my family and even I thought I was gonna be a engineer. But, I didn't love math the way I loved connecting with other people and persuading others to follow my vision. Thats when I discovered DECA as a junior in highschool. The rush of coming up with a full advertising plan in 30 minutes and presenting to two complete strangers I had never met was excelerating. Until I graduated, I became heavily involved in DECA and found my passion was Marketing and Sales.

DECA

I joined DECA as a junior in highschool trying to escape AP Chemistry. At first I was reluctant to sign up for DECA but it was the only class that was offered at that certain time period. But, the more I learned about DECA the more intrigued I became. Business was a environment I had always been interested in but I never pursued that interest. We had guest speakers every month aned engaging activities that reflected situations that I would face in the real world. My teacher asked me and my friend Kyle to compete at the area DECA competition. We weren't really interested until we realized we could skip AP US History and Pre-Calculus to go compete. We participated and ended up making it to the State DECA Conference. After that, Kyle and I continued as partners for the remainder of our DECA tenure. We enjoyed attending local conferences with business owners and meeting other students that shared our love for business. We qualified for state the next two years and participated in the Chapter Awards Project. Our cover page for our project is pictured to the left.
