The city of Berlin was a delight to explore. There was so much going on as a creative city, and also so much to learn from its history. This is where I started traveling with my study abroad group, and we visited many firms and studios to see what design is like in Berlin. It is definitely a thriving, lively place full of things to explore.
Our first introduction to the city of Berlin was on bike. We took a Fat Tire Bike Tour around the city and saw a lot of notable places, including Alexanderplatz, Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Berlin Wall.
We visited the Teufelsberg Tower, radio spy towers used by Americans to spy on Soviet radio signals during the Cold War. Today, it is a massive street art gallery, where you can climb up the Towers and see street art at its best.
This was the beginning of our studio tours. The first place we went to was Martina Flor's studio. She is a very talented letterer, and I was really excited that we were going to meet her and see her work.
Every tour we did was a little different, and we visited more than a dozen firms during the trip. It was really valuable to see the different work environments and projects that are going on in Berlin's design scene. It is definitely a great place to be as a designer.
Today, we took a day trip to see the Bauhaus, a famous design school. It was amazing to see this place that I've learned about in my classes in person. The attention to detail really opened my eyes up to just how designed something can be.
We also visited the city of Potsdam and saw the Prussian palace Sans Souci. It was nice to have an afternoon visiting another town and enjoy the hot summer weather.
Today I explored Berlin and ate pancakes at Feiner Herr. Best pancakes ever!! We also went to the Olympic Perspective Playground, and took photos in the interactive photography exhibit.
